Digital Story Telling
The Way of Barbers
I orginally clicked on this link, because miss read it as Walt Disney. However, I was pleasantly surprised with my happening upon this story of a little old barber. I felt comforted in the fact that he emphasized somethings never change, like a barber. Keeping up with his fathers supplies, made me feel a sense of pride in your family and family line. I also liked the fact that his dad passed down a bible with the tools of his trade. almost hinting that he relied on it just as much as scissors to be successful. I also thought his approach to being a barber was rather fascinating. It is not something you nessicarly think about, but your barber does play somewhat of an instrumental role in your life. But, like he noted they never know when customers die or move on. That was interesting to me, because a barber is crucial to how we present ourselves, but then again barely knows us.
The Way of Barbers
A Lesson in Time
I really enjoyed this story. First, because the young woman talks of her great grandmother becoming a doctor, which is a goal of mine. It reminded me of my story, because something during the Civil War, a time of tragedy, sparked in her a desire to serve and help others. Simmilarly when my baby cousin was passing away from a brain tumor, I had a similar realization that I too wanted to go to medical school and help those who are hurting. I think sometimes, it takes a real life experience like war or losing a loved one to want to make that commitment. I am thankful for people like the speakers great grandmother who forged the road for women to becoming doctors. I only hope that I can have the courage and perservance that this woman must have faced when pursuing a career in medicine at that time.

Nurstory
All of the videos I watched were in the Nurstory section. These videos were very interesting to me because I am about to apply for Nursing school. The three videos that I watched were Vicki Erikson's digital story, Go Around, and Rural Folks. Vicki Erickson's was my favorite story; however, I think that she needed a more interesting title. If I wasn't interesting in becoming a NICU nurse then I probably wouldn't have stayed on her video for very long. Her voice was very soothing and soft and the music went along with the story perfectly. The video that was my least favorite was Go Around. I just felt that she was reading off a pice of paper and the story didn't really pull me in.

Go Around
What I liked about the video from the beginning was the music as it started playing, it was very dramatic music that went along with the sound of the women's voice narrating it. It made me want to watch it all the way through and know what was going on in the pictures. The narrator incorporates sounds with the images she's put in that change the direction of the movie in an instant. It went from a beautiful picture of a helicopter to zooming into the darkness of the night in the background, pausing the music, then adding in sounds that give you an idea of whats coming next in her story. Although this isn't a very happy upbeat video I'd like to be able to apply these same effects to our video so it's not just picture after picture.

Digital Storytelling
Big Stories, Small Towns
What I like about this example of digital storytelling is that it shows the personalities of the men being documented. Instead of showing a montage of pictures of the activities they were participating in and the unique goal of the leaders, this story captures the actual life and humor of each subject through footage and video of their interactions. Another aspect that I thought added to the overall story was the interview voiceovers that were integrated giving more personal and direct information on the work of the men. To me, this story is much more believable and meaningful because it isn't focused just on powerful songs and collages but on capturing the moving character of the subject's everyday life.
Nurstory
This story really caught my attention because it is from the point of view of a nurse which is what I am studying to become. This story was very inspiring and really aimed to make nurses and all health care providers realize that their patients aren't really cases but rather people with names. Although the pictures chosen for this montage weren't very personal, the audio and voiceover that told the actual story compensated making the video meaningful and relatable.

Welcome to the course!
Combining TCF and Honors is a new adventure for all of us this term. I am very excited about this work, but am realizing that how to structure and develop this course content is challenging. I am trying to negotiate how to best build our technical skill set, spark our creative energies, and produce digital (life) stories that we all can be proud of.
In class today, we'll talk about digital media making + storytelling.
We'll explore one method of digital storytelling created by Joe Lambert at the Center for Digital Storytelling in Berkeley, California.
Let me first say that digital stories are NOT photo slideshows. They are thoughtfully constructed, short videos that reflect the storyteller's point of view... we'll get more deeply into this later.
One of the digital storytelling projects that I am most inspired by as a potential creative spark for Art to Life is PATIENT VOICES, a digital storytelling initiative developed in the UK by Pip Hardy and Tony Sumter.
This is just the beginning....
